Deck & Fence Staining

Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck

$2 – $5

Available Finishes: Transparent shows full wood grain with light color. Semi-transparent adds color while grain still shows — most popular for decks. Solid gives full color coverage, best for older wood with imperfections.

Why Decks Cost More Than Fences

Decks take a beating from foot traffic, standing water, furniture, and direct sun. That means significantly more prep work — sanding, stripping old finish, cleaning, and repairing damaged boards — before new stain can go on. Fences are vertical surfaces with less wear and typically need lighter preparation.

Typical Lifespan: 2–8 years

What You Actually Need to Know

Skip the contractor jargon – Here's what matters when choosing your siding.

What's the real difference between these paints?

It comes down to resin quality. Cheap paint uses cheaper resins that break down faster under UV and temperature swings. Latitude is a solid product that does the job. Duration uses a thicker, more advanced formula that grips surfaces better and resists fading longer. Emerald is Sherwin-Williams' best technology — it stays cleaner, holds color longer, and requires fewer coats. The price difference between packages is usually $1,000-3,000 on a typical home — but the longevity difference can mean avoiding a full repaint for an extra 5+ years.

Why does prep matter so much?

The number one reason paint fails isn't the paint — it's bad prep. If you paint over peeling areas, dirty surfaces, or un-caulked gaps, the new paint will peel right off within a year or two. The elastomeric caulking we use flexes with Denver's extreme temperature swings (it can go from 10 degrees to 60 degrees in the same day), and the peel bonding primer creates a surface that new paint can actually grip to. Skipping prep is the most expensive shortcut in painting.

How do I know if my house needs repainting?

Look for chalking (a powdery residue when you rub the surface), visible peeling or cracking, faded or uneven color, bare wood showing through, or caulking that's cracked and pulling away from trim. If your last paint job was 7+ years ago, it's worth getting an inspection.

How long does exterior painting take?

Most Denver homes take 3-5 days depending on size, prep needed, and weather. We don't cut corners on dry time between coats or rush prep work. Colorado's low humidity actually helps — paint cures faster here than in most of the country.

What about painting vs. new siding?

If your siding is structurally sound and you like the style, painting is a fraction of the cost of new siding and can make your home look brand new. If your siding is rotting, warped, or damaged, painting won't fix the underlying problem. We'll tell you honestly which option makes sense — we do both, so we have no incentive to push one over the other.

Does the color I choose affect the price?

Not with our pricing — the per-square-foot rate is the same regardless of color within each package. However, going from a very light to a very dark color (or vice versa) may require an additional coat for full coverage. We'll let you know during the estimate if that applies.
